  1. Finally, after about two and a half years, there is an update available
  2. to MGIF. After all that time this of course not just any update...
  3.  
  4. This v5.00 release was a bit rushed at the end, since I really wanted to
  5. get it out before Christmas '95. I do believe that all bugs that have
  6. been reported to me have been fixed, though.
  7.  
  8. It's quite likely that there'll be an updated release sometime during
  9. January or February '96, but for that I need _your_ comments.
  10. I'm not only interested in bug reports and such, but also in what you
  11. think is missing in the documentation or that is hard to find or
  12. understand or whatever.

  15. All use of the program is at your own risk. No serious bugs are known to
  16. date, but there can very well be a few.

  19. Documentation

  21. Apart from this file, the following files contain valuable information on
  22. running MGIFv5:

  24. MGIF.HYP     -   ST-Guide format manual for MGIF.
  25. MGIF.OPT     -   Short descriptions of available command line switches.
  26.  
  27. There are also a few other files in the archive that you should take
  28. the time to read:

  30. FREEWARE.BUT -   _Please_, register MGIF.
  31. STARTUP.TXT  -   A quick introduction to MGIF
  32.  
  33. MGIF is a very complex program, so you'd be well advised to look through
  34. the EXAMPLES directory for some ideas on what you can do.
  35. The ST-Guide manual is of course the most important document, though.

  38. Startup info
  39. ============
  40. When MGIFv5 is started it looks for a number of files.
  41. If it is started as a GEM program (.PRG or .GTP), one of those is
  42. MGIFv5.RSC. If MGIF can't find that file it aborts.

  44. The MGIF_FL.EXE file contains code that enables MGIF to store self-loadable
  45. .FL files. If it's not available, normal .FL files will be created.
  46.  
  47. The environment variable MGIF_OPT can contain the same kind of parameters
  48. that are normally given on the command line. If no other name is given, MGIF
  49. also tries to load MGIF.OPT in the current directory.
  50. It is also possible to store options permanently inside the MGIF executable.

  53. A file containing matrices for the ordered dither display, MGIF.DTT, is
  54. loaded if available. MGIF is also compatible with the .DIT files used by
  55. GEMView and Speed of Light. A switch can be used to load another dither
  56. file if needed.

  58. The names of the flicker code, options and dither files can be changed using
  59. switches.
  60.  
  61. All keyboard shortcuts can be redefined and more added in the file MGIF.KEY.
